Hello, Club Members!
What’s new with the JCARC?
- Website updates are now active! We now have the Monthly Meeting Minutes posted on the website. The website calendar has the most up to date information and shows up and coming events. We also post up and coming events on the Events page. Check it out, come out and have fun with our hobby!
- We have POTA Saturday’s at different parks in the area. This Saturday, POTA will be at Dinosaur Park in Glenrose. Meet at the pavilion at 8am to 11ish. Do not need to bring anything!
- We started Fox Hunts in Johnson County. Ed (KJ5JQD) is forming a Fox Hunt event where we use QR codes to log our findings. You will be able to log your fox hunts online and find other Fox Hunts in the area. https://kc5jmd.net/fox-manager-map-jcarc/

Technician Cram and Test
Date: August 29, 2026
Time: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Location: Johnson County Emergency Operations Center.
JCARC is hosting a Technician LCC License Cram and Test to promote and help those who are looking for their FCC Technician License. This was very successful last class and so if you know people interested in obtaining their license let them know the information. Make sure you have and bring your FRN number from the FCC website. Cost of the test is $14. More details on our events page.
JCARC Fox Hunt

The JCARC will be hosting another Fox Hunt in Johnson County this Saturday. See the events page on the website for more details.
I have my license, now what?
Date: September 19, 2026
Time: 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Location: Johnson County Emergency Operations Center.
This get together is to bring newly licensed HAMs with experienced HAMs to help you guide the way and answer your questions about the hobby. We will have some equipment to show and a lot of experience to get you started and help you with your ideas. Amateur radio has so many paths to take and we want to help you with your path, least provide some information or even guide you to other HAMs which can help you.
Technical Corner:
Radio wave propagation refers to the transmission of radio waves through various media, influencing how signals are transmitted over distances. The primary mechanisms of propagation include reflection, refraction, diffraction, and scattering. Reflection occurs when radio waves bounce off surfaces, allowing signals to follow the curvature of the Earth. Refraction happens when waves pass through different media with varying densities, bending the waves and altering their paths. Diffraction allows radio waves to bend around obstacles, enabling communication even when direct line-of-sight is obstructed. Scattering involves the dispersion of radio waves in different directions, which can impact signal strength and clarity depending on environmental factors such as terrain and atmospheric conditions.
